What's your mission statement?
What are you currently working on?
- The students in BSG are advocates for the rights and issues of the student body of Beacon High School. We actively work to create a place where student voices are heard and addressed.
- BSG participants are students who want to be leaders and learn leadership, activism and organizing skills.
Who can join?
- Anyone is invited to come and attend a meeting. Generally, meetings are held in Room 420, every Tuesday from 2:30-4:30.
- We aim to maintain a core group of people who are actively involved.
Was there an election I'm not aware of?
- No. we didn't have elections. In fact, we believe that an elected group of student representatives is not actually representative of the student body. Instead, we started with a group of interested students, and after a few meetings, we actively recruited members from various "constituencies" within the student body. By striving for a "guaranteed representation" model, we try to make sure all sub-groups, social justice clubs, marginalized or oppressed groups have a voice, and BSG is as multicultural as possible. When important decisions need to be made, we try to actively and deliberately invite people to participate.
What's your mission statement?
- At the end of the 2016-2017 schoolyear we will create the first mission statement, and by-laws, based on our experience so far.
What are you currently working on?
- We're gathering data through surveys on the Beacon students and what they care about. Results will be published.
- We're working on organizing a school-wide event where students can share ideas. Details TBD soon.
